Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with axis, terminal, pyramidal, paniculate, male inflorescences much-branched, female inflorescences few-branched; bracts minute, triangular, not leaf-like*, green, falling early; pedicels present in female flowers, very short, not articulated*, absent in male flowers. Male flowers: extremely small, sepals 5, imbricate, free, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; stamens 5, free; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae introrse in bud; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 5, imbricate, partially fused; petals 0; disc 0; ovary locules 2, ovules per locule 2; styles 2*, free* or partially fused*, 2-branched (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat*, surface plumose; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, obcordate, strongly lobed, unsculptured*, hairy, greenish to brown; seed carunculate, without covering or membranous layer, not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like*.
