Leaves alternate, fasciculate (often densely so on very short shoots), opposite or whorled, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin toothed or entire, blade not pellucid-punctate; leaf glands absent; venation reduced or obscure, domatia absent*; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole present or absent, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with or without axis, male inflorescence axillary, racemose, paniculate or fasciculate on short shoots, female inflorescence axillary, fasciculate or flowers solitary; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, not articulated*. Male flowers: sepals 4 – 10, imbricate, greenish; petals 0; disc inside the staminal whorl (intrastaminal), cushion- or plate-shaped, lobed; stamens 4 – 10, free; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae extrorse in bud; pistillode absent. Female flowers: sepals 5 – 13, imbricate, caducous, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular, lobed, ovary locules 2 – 5, ovules per locule 2; styles 2 – 5*, free, style entire, styles or stigmas not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, unsculptured*, greenish to brown; seed carunculate, without covering, membraneous layer, not fleshy *; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
