Trees or shrubs, monoecious. Exudate (from cut stems) present, white. Unarmed*. Indumentum present, hairs dendritic, (multicellular, usually coloured). Stipules 0, or free*, simple, unlobed, entire, not spine-like*, not leaf-like*, without glands. Leaves often crowded towards shoot tips, otherwise more or less evenly distributed along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin entire, blade not pellucid-punctate, upper surface without glands, lower surface minutely papillate, 2-glandular towards margin near base, sometimes also with additional irregularly distributed glands; venation pinnate but sometimes with 3 strong veins from base; domatia absent*; stipel-like structures absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with axis, terminal, paniculate, bracts of side branches small, without glands, floral bracts with 1–several pairs of cup- to disc-shaped glands, not leaf-like*, green; floral buds initially covered by large bracts; pedicels absent or present, not articulated*. Male flowers: almost sessile in bud, later with short pedicel; sepals 2, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; stamens 2, completely fused (anthers free); anther without conspicuous modification, thecae extrorse in bud; pistillode absent. Female flowers: almost sessile; sepals 3, partially fused, without glands or with cup-shaped glands on margins, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 1; styles 3, completely fused into a short column (stigmas free), stigmas 3, free, entire, not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, smooth, glabrous or indistinctly hairy, greenish to brown; seed (where known) with small caruncle, with no other covering or membranous layer; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
