SUMMARY
Shrubs or herbs, monoecious. Exudate (from cut stems) present, white. Unarmed*. Glabrous throughout or indumentum present, at least on inflorescences, hairs simple (multicellular). Stipules free*, simple, unlobed, entire, not spine-like*, not leaf-like*, without glands. Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, usually 3–11- lobed, sometimes unlobed, base symmetrical, margin entire or toothed, blade not pellucid-punctate, leaf glands absent; venation pinnate with 3 veins from base; domatia absent*; stipel-like structures absent*. Petiole long, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with axis, terminal, panicle-like?*, with 0–4 female flowers in basal part, male flowers above, many; bracts with a pair of elliptical glands, not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, not articulated*. Male flowers: calyx symmetry strongly bilateral, sepals completely fused, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; stamens 1, enclosed in the calyx; anther without conspicuous modification; pistillode absent. Female flowers: pedicels long, often bending downwards; sepals 3, free, with or without 2 glands at base, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 1; styles 3, completely fused into a long column (stigmas free)*, stigmas 3, free, entire, not flat*, surface smooth or papillose; staminodes absent. Fruit with long pedicel, dehiscent, not sculptured, glabrous or indistinctly hairy, greenish to brown; seed without appendage, covering or membraneous layer*, not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
