Trees or shrubs, dioecious or monoecious. Exudate present, clear. Unarmed*. Glabrous throughout or indumentum present, hairs simple or 2–armed. Stipules present, sometimes falling early, free*, simple, unlobed, entire *, not spine-like*, not leaf-like*, without glands. Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, opposite or whorled, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin entire to toothed, blade not pellucid-punctate, with or without 2 glands at leaf base on upper surface (or petiole apex), with or without glands on leaf margin; venation pinnate; domatia absent*; stipel-like structures absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, 2-glandular at apex (or glands on leaf base). Inflorescence with axis, sometimes without axis in female, axillary, leaf-opposed, between petioles, or more or less terminal, male inflorescence spike-, raceme- or panicle-like, long, many-flowered, bisexual and female inflorescences short, branched, or female flowers sometimes solitary; bracts usually minute, sometimes enlarged, 2-glandular or not, leaf-like or not*, green; pedicels present, not articulated*. Male flowers: flowers minute; sepals 4–5, imbricate or valvate, partially fused, membraneous, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; stamens 3–4, more or less free, filaments very short; anthers peltate, thecae introrse in bud; pistillode present or 0. Female flowers: sepals 3–4, rarely 4–8; imbricate or valvate, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, cup-like or comprised of 3 – 4 scales; ovary locules 2–3, ovules per locule 1; styles 2–3, free or partially fused, style entire or 2-branched at apex (i.e. ultimate divisions per locule 1–2), styles or stigmas flat, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, not sculptured*, greenish to brown; seed fully covered by a fleshy outer layer (sarcotesta); embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
