Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, symmetrical, entire, blade not pellucid-punctate; leaf glands absent*; venation pinnate; domatia absent*; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with axis, axillary, racemose or paniculate, the male inflorescences large, the females smaller and simpler; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels absent (flowers sessile), or very short*. Male flowers: sepals 4 – 6, imbricate, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc outside the staminal whorl (extrastaminal), annular and lobed or dsic glands 5, free or connate at base; stamens 3 – 6, free; anther with conspicuous modification, thecae in bud introrse or extrorse; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 4 – 6, imbricate, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular; ovary locules 2 – 3, ovules per locule 2; styles 0 – 3, 2-branched (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit indehiscent, unsculptured*, black; seed without appendage, covering or membraneous layer*; not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
