Shrubs, dioecious or monoecious. Exudate absent. Unarmed. Glabrous throughout or indumentum present, hairs simple. Stipules free, simple, unlobed, entire, not spine-like, not leaf-like, without glands. Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin entire, leaf blade not pellucid-punctate, leaf glands absent*; venation pinnate; domatia absent; stipel-like structures absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex, without glands. Inflorescence without axis, axillary, flowers solitary or few together in clusters (fascicles); pedicels present, not articulated; bracts present, not leaf-like. Male flowers: sepals 5, more or less free, imbricate, greenish; petals 5, free; disc outside the staminal whorl (extrastaminal), annular, with 5 regular 2-lobed segments; stamens 5, free; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae latrorse in bud; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 5, free, imbricate; petals 5, free; disc surrounding the ovary, annular, with 5 very shallowly 2-lobed segments; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 2; styles 3, free, 2-branched for ½ of their length or less (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat, surface smooth; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent; seed smooth, without appendage, covering or membranous layer, not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
