SUMMARY
Shrubs, much-branched, monoecious. Exudate (from cut stems) present, clear. Armed (spiny on longer shoots, minutely spiny on very short, condensed shoots). Indumentum present, hairs simple. Stipules free*, simple, unlobed, entire *, usually spine-like, not leaf-like*, without glands, persistent. Leaves: on longer shoots distributed evenly along stem, alternate, on very short, condensed shoots fasciculate; small, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin entire, sometimes in-rolled, blade not pellucid-punctate, leaf glands absent; venation pinnate or reduced, obscure; domatia absent*; stipel-like structures absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence without axis (or with very short axis?), axillary, few-flowered, flowers small, clustered; bracts not leaf-like*, green. Male flowers: pedicels absent or present, not articulated*; sepals 5–6, imbricate, partially fused, greenish; petals 5–7, imbricate, glabrous, greenish; disc glands many, randomly distributed among stamens (interstaminal); stamens 20–30, free; anther with conspicuous modification, thecae introrse in bud; pistillode absent. Female flowers: pedicels present, not articulated*, extending in fruit; sepals 5–6?, imbricate, partially fused, sometimes becoming slightly enlarged relative to other floral parts, greenish; petals commonly 0, or, if present, 5?, very minute; disc surrounding the ovary, annular; ovary locules 3–5, ovules per locule 1; styles 3–5*, free* or partially fused*, very short, entire, or styles 0; stigmas entire or 2-branched at apex, flat, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, not sculptured*, greenish to brown; seed with caruncle, with no other covering or membranous layer; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
