Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin toothed or entire, blade not pellucid-punctate; with 2 glands at base below; 3-veined from base; domatia absent*; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*. Inflorescence with axis, axillary, spike-like, the males often a few together, the females solitary; bracts inconspicuous, not leaf-like*, green; pedicels short to almost 0, not articulated*. Male flowers: sepals 3–4, valvate, free, greenish; petals 0; disc of several large glands outside or inside the stamen whorl (extrastaminal or intrastaminal); stamens 5–8, free; anther with conspicuous modification, thecae introrse in bud; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 4–5, imbricate, free, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 1; styles 3, free, entire, styles or stigmas not flat*, surface papillose; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, unsculptured*, greenish to brown; seed fully covered by a fleshy outer layer (sarcotesta), embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
