Tree or shrub, monoecious. Exudate absent*. Unarmed*. Indumentum present, hairs simple. Stipules minute, free*, simple, unlobed, entire*, not spine-like*, not leaf-like*, without glands. Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, margin toothed, base symmetrical, blade not pellucid-punctate, with or without glands at leaf margin; venation pinnate; domatia absent*; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with axis, axillary, terminal or almost so, raceme-like, bisexual: male and female flowers at base, the rest male except for the terminal female flower; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, sometimes very short or absent in male flowers, articulated (sometimes, in male flowers) or not articulated. Male flowers: sepals 4, valvate, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc outside the staminal whorl (extrastaminal), annular (shallowly lobed); stamens 4, partially fused; anther without conspicuous modification; pistillode absent. Female flowers: sepals 4–5; imbricate, free, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 1; style 1, large, obovoid, (or styles several, completely fused into a single column), 6–12-toothed at apex (i.e. ultimate divisions per locule many), style or stigmas not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, not sculptured*, greenish to brown; seed without appendage, covering or membraneous layer*, not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
