Inflorescence with axis, terminal (on short lateral shoots), flowers in smallish complex branched groups, female part basal, with 0–5 flowers, often distinctly separated from the male part or even on a different plant, male flowers many, aggregated into a densely congested head, floral buds initially covered by large bracts; bracts 2-glandualr, not leaf-like*, green; Male flowers: pedicels absent or almost so, not articulated*; sepals 2–3, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; stamens 1–3, filaments long, partially or completely fused; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae extrorse in bud; pistillode absent. Female flowers: pedicels long, not articulated*; sepals 3, partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc 0; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 1; styles 0 or 3, completely fused into a column (stigmas free), stigmas 3, free, entire, not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit with long pedicel, dehiscent, smooth, greenish to brown; seed with a very large caruncle, with no other covering or membranous layer; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
