Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence without axis, axillary, flowers in small clusters, males many, females few; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, not articulated*, or 0. Male flowers: pedicels present, sepals 4–6; imbricate, free, greenish; petals 0; disc glands 4–10, outside the staminal whorl (extrastaminal); stamens 5–20, partially to completely fused; anther with conspicuous modification (connective broad), thecae extrorse in bud; pistillode present. Female flowers: pedicels present or absent, sepals 4–6; imbricate, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular, entire or lobed; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 1; styles 3, more or less free to partially fused, style 2-branched (i.e. ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat*, surface papillose or plumose; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, spiny, bristly or tuberculate, hairy, greenish to brown; seed black, shiny, carunculate, with no other covering or membranous layer; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
