Stipules free*, simple, unlobed, entire *, not spine-like*, not leaf-like*, glands absent. Perulae covering the terminal bud acuminate, spinulose. Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, never peltate, base symmetrical, margin entire, blade not pellucid-punctate, leaf glands absent*; venation pinnate; domatia absent*; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence without axis, axillary, flowers sessile, male flowers numerous, densely glomerate, female flowers fewer or solitary; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels absent (in males) or present, not articulated*. Male flowers: sepals 4 – 5, imbricate, free, greenish; petals 4 – 5 or 0, glabrous, greenish; disc surrounding the staminal whorl (extrastaminal), annular, lobed; stamens 4 – 5, free or partially fused; anther without conspicuous modification; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 4 – 5, imbricate, free, greenish; petals 4 – 5, glabrous, greenish; disc surrounding the ovary, annular, more or less entire; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 2; styles 3, free, style 2-branched (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2) or expanded into a broad limb, styles or stigmas flat or not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, unsculptured or warty, hairy, greenish to brown; seed without appendage, covering or membranous layer*, not fleshy; embryo not minute, storage, cotyledons massive.
