Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence without axis, axillary, male flowers often numerous, fasciculate, female flowers few or solitary; bracts inconspicuous, not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, very slender, not articulated. Male flowers: sepals 4 – 7, imbricate, free or partially fused, almost petal-like, or scarious, greenish; petals 0; disc glands among the stamens (interstaminal), free or united; stamens 4 – 7, free; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae extrorse in bud; pistillode present or rarely absent. Female flowers: sepals 4 – 7, imbricate, free or partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular (entire); ovary locules 2 – 4, ovules per locule 2; styles 3*, free or partially fused, 2-branched (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent or indehiscent, unsculptured*, greenish to brown or white; seed without appendage, covering or membranous layer*, not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
