Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex*. Inflorescence with axis, axillary, racemose or spicate, flowers glomerulate; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, not articulated*. Male flowers: sepals 3 – 5, imbricate, free or partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc glands free, protruding between the filaments; stamens 3 – 6, free; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae introrse in bud; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 3 – 5, imbricate, free or partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular (entire or slightly lobed); ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 2; styles 3*, free* or partially fused*, entire or 2-branched (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent (tardily) or indehiscent, unsculptured*, greenish to brown, columella with papery wings; seed fully covered by a fleshy outer layer (sarcotesta); embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
