Shrubs or herbs, monoecious. Exudate absent. Unarmed. Glabrous throughout or indumentum present, hairs simple or glandular. Stipules free*, simple, unlobed, not spine-like, not leaf-like, without glands, margin entire with glandular hairs or lobed to finely divided, glabrous. Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, base symmetrical, margin entire, leaf blade not pellucid-punctate; leaf glands absent; venation pinnate; domatia absent; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole present, without swellings or bends at base or apex, without glands. Inflorescence without axis, axillary, male flowers often fasciculate, less often solitary, female flowers solitary; bracts not leaf-like*, green; pedicels present, articulated, articulation practically invisible before flowers fall. Male flowers: sepals 5–6, imbricate, free or almost so, greenish; petals 5, glabrous, greenish; disc outside the staminal whorl (extrastaminal), annular with 5 2-lobed segments or comprised of 5 clearly separated disc glands; stamens 5, free or partially fused; anther without conspicuous modification, thecae latrorse in bud; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 5–6, imbricate, free or almost so, greenish; petals 0 or 5, glabrous, greenish, sometimes hidden; disc glands surrounding the ovary, free or united; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 2; styles 3, free, 2-branched (i.e. ultimate divisions per locule 2), stigmas not flat, surface smooth; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, greenish to brown; seed without appendage, covering or membranous layer, not fleshy; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
